MARA International stands for Medication-Assisted Recovery Anonymous, a 12-step program for people who are taking prescribed medication to treat drug and alcohol use disorders. MARA is for people who are looking for a recovery option that is different from traditional 12-step or self-help meetings, or who may feel uncomfortable in their day-to-day lives. MARA offers in-person and online meetings, and posts new meetings weekly.

BreakFree began in 1993 when Fred Jealous, founder/director of Breakthrough for Men generously shared his successful Breakthrough program materials with Licensed Clinical Social Worker Janet Thomas who designed an entire curriculum for women.
